My name is Yusef Salaam
I represent the 9th District of the City of New York in the Council of this great city to build a brighter future for Harlem.
Everyone knows my story from the headlines to the hardcovers to the silver screen, but what far too many of those in power fail to realize is that my story, our story, continues to play out in communities all over this country.
What I faced may have been an extreme example, but there are countless young men in Harlem who have never been given an uplifting hand. Countless mothers praying their children come home. Countless families struggling to find ways to not only stay in their community, but find purpose and opportunities to thrive.
I’ve focused on being better for my experiences, not bitter. Stretching out my hand in partnership, to offer hope not despair. And now more than ever, I believe Harlem requires that type of leadership — leadership that is of and for the people.
BUILDING A MORE JUST NEW YORK CITY
As a Member of the New York City Council – representing my home, my heart, my Harlem – I pledge to fight to move our community forward through an Equity & Empowerment Agenda.
These are the key issues I will fight for in the City Council:
ECONOMIC JUSTICE
Harlem residents deserve prosperity. We will invest in workforce and economic development opportunities that provide careers and investments in Harlem.
HOUSING JUSTICE
Harlem residents deserve stable, truly-affordable housing so we can plan for the future, boldly commit to ending homelessness, and support pathways to homeownership.
HUMAN INFRASTRUCTURE
We will increase investments in our human infrastructure like schools that enrich, mental health programs that uplift, and culturally competent hospitals that address our neighbors’ holistic needs.
ENVIRONMENTAL JUSTICE
Systemic racism and intentional disinvestment in our community has left us open to the worst impacts of climate change. Harlem has the opportunity to be a shining green beacon to the world.
JUSTICE + SAFETY
Harlem needs to truly be safe. We must fight to implement equitable public safety measures that keep Harlem secure while ensuring the human rights of our community are respected.
